Johnson, Linton Kwesi

Johnson, Linton Kwesi
   b. 1952, Chapeltown (Jamaica)
   Dub poet
After coming to Britain in 1963, Johnson took a sociology degree at Goldsmith’s College in London. He has continued an early interest in music, literature, and politics through poetry performances, verse publications, writing for the New Musical Express and Melody Maker, and his involvement with the Race Today collective. His 1977 album Dread Beat an’ Blood has been seen as the blueprint and catalyst for dub poetry with its combination of reggae rhythms (provided by Dennis Bovell) and Johnson’s slow, careful and directly political lyrics. He is principally known for tackling subjects such as the 1981 race riots, the arrest on suspicion laws, and white violence on blacks, particularly on Forces of Victory (1979), Making History (1984) and Tings and Times (1990).
